Some of the Grade 5/6s are part of the Animal Crew, in which they feed and take care of the animals at the school, including a fish. The water in the fish's tank needed to be conditioned and Mme Christine gave the students a challenge: to figure out how many drops of conditioner to put in the fish tank. In order to do this, the students used their previous knowledge in math as well as their problem solving skills in order to find the volume of the tank, and complete further calculations. They worked well and logically in order to find the answer.
The Grade 5/6s started their new unit about Children's rights. As an opening activity, the students partnered up and outlined one of the other students on chart paper to represent a child. The students then were tasked with writing 10 things that the child would need in order to be happy and healthy. The students then had to narrow down their list of 10 things down to a list of 5. We then had a class discussion about needs versus wants, and what children need. The students were very creative and thoughtful in their thinking.
During French class, the 5/6 students were learning and reviewing verbs. The students had the choice to write sentences using the different verbs, quiz each other about the different verb tenses, or create a song with the different verbs. Many of the students chose to make a song, enthusiastically and creatively singing to one another.
During Math class, the students used playing cards to solve puzzles. They collaborated together and used problem-solving and resilience in order to complete the different problems. They loved being hands-on!
This week, the Grade 5/6s made paper airplanes. They worked in pairs and used their imagination and research skills. After 30 minutes, the class had a competition to see which paper airplane could go the farthest. They did a great job and enjoyed themselves!
The first few weeks back at school have been filled with fun, laughter, and creativity. During the iSTEAM period, the students created their own self-moving horse made out of paper. The students were detail-oriented and imaginative while creating their horse and ramp, and modified their horses multiple times in order to get them to be faster.
This past week was the last week of school! We wrapped up the unit about Reproduction, and did some fun, end of year activities. One of the last activities that the students completed had to do with oviparous, viviparous and ovoviviparous animals. The students compared the three different types of animals, and were able to do so in any way that they wanted. Some students created videos, some created drawings, and one wrote a story. They were very creative and demonstrated a good understanding of the differences. They are now all ready for a wonderful summer break!
The last unit of the year was focusing on plant, insect, and animal reproduction. To begin the unit, the Grade 6s studied plant reproduction. As one of the starting activities, they chose one plant that reproduces sexually, and one plant that reproduces asexually. They then found the differences and similarities between the two plants by creating a venn diagram. After this activity, they participated in a class debate, comparing sexual and asexual reproduction in plants, insects and animals.
This week the grade 6 students had their EXPO! They have been working diligently for the past 2 months, and they finally presented to their classmates, teachers and parents. The EXPO was held online, and rather fitting considering the topic was about the media. The students created a news broadcast as a class, they each created their own website based on their own central idea and lines of inquiry, as well as their own TED talk about to a passion of theirs related to the media. They did a fantastic job!
